Where Did You Learn About This?

by Don on October 9, 2009

So often, when I’m speaking with prospective clients or existing clients about search engine optimization, local search or web design in general, they often ask me, “Where did you learn about this?” I’ve often thought it was an interesting question for them to ask. And, what would prompt someone to ask such a question.

Now I know. Now I understand.

I think it’s all about being intrigued with something you don’t know.

I don’t think I had ever asked that question of anyone, until this morning, when I found myself asking my mechanic the very same thing.

You see, even though I recently had an oil change, the last week or so, when I would start my car, the “Change Engine Oil Soon” light would come on and stay on for about one minute. So I finally got around to stopping by my mechanic’s place today and told him about it. He then proceeded to say, well let’s go fix it. He asked me for my keys, he got into the car but before he started the car, he pressed the gas pedal three (3) times. He started the car, waited for all the regular dashboard lights to cycle through, turned the car off and then turned it on again.

No “Change Engine Oil Soon” light.

So there I was chuckling, when I finally said it, “Where did you learn about this?”

I was intrigued.

Fact is, whether it’s my mechanic, my accountant,  my handyman or myself, we’ve all learned about what ever it is we do by educating ourselves, gaining more knowledge on what it is we feel we need to know to better serve our clients. In this instance, my mechanic simply replied, “in a manual.”

Since being involved with what I do for almost 10 years, much of what I’ve learned is from others. It hasn’t been through classes or college courses. I spend alot of time on the Internet, following others who I feel I can learn from. Well, I came across a webinar today that I feel is important enough to share.

The webinar was put on by John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing and is aimed towards small business blogging. I highly recommend that if you are a small business that you take an hour and listen to what John has to say.

As I expressed to one of my clients, this isn’t where small businesses are heading…it’s where small businesses already need to be.
