How to SEO a Small Business Website

by Don on October 21, 2009

Came across a great post written by Matt McGee on his Small Business Search Marketing blog.

In it, three things struck me the most about what he was writing about.

  1. Small business owners really are becoming more in tune with needing better search optimization for their websites.
  2. Now that they realize they need SEO, they do not know who or where to turn to, what the associated costs might be or how long it will take to get decent ranking in Google or other search engines for their keywords or keyword phrases.
  3. SEO for a small business website can be done by anyone – who has the knowledge of what to do. Small business owners DO NOT need to hire an SEO consultant if they have more time than money.

There are some very good resources also provided in the post if you are so inclined to learn more about SEO either before you choose to either try it on your own, or hire an SEO consultant.

I think to put things in better perspective regarding the overall cost of hiring a consultant and the time involved in getting your website to rank for many relevant money keywords or keyword phrases, or those keywords that convert to sales, should be looked at with the the lifetime value of your customer in mind.

Your ROI on SEO efforts should not be measure in a period of one week, one month or even six months, unless of course that is the duration that you expect to have your customer. Most businesses retain customers for many years which results in many purchases.

For example, say you determine that the lifetime value of your typical customer is $5,000. Now, let’s say you spent  $10,000 for six months of an SEO consultant’s time and expertise. The true measure of success for your SEO dollars is how many new customers will be generated over time.

If the SEO efforts even generate just one new customer per month, compare the lifetime value of these new customers against your 6-month SEO expense. That is where you’ll see the return.

Mike’s got some other great articles on small business SEO that I encourage you to read up on. Here is a link to his website and article.
