Just came across a great article by David Mihm, a web designer from Portland, Oregon. The article, “Do-It-Yourself SEO Advice For SMBs” discusses his counter-viewpoint to the notion that marketing middlemen are needed by small business owners when it comes to promoting their own businesses online but does so with a caveat.
Mihm states:
With that in mind (and this might amount to heresy in the SEO industry) – I’m going to disagree with Hanan that a middleman is a critical component of the online ecosystem. Caveat: hiring a top-notch search consultant will almost always bring a positive ROI.
The article does a great job summarizing many of the components that go into the many facets of search engine optimization and marketing as it relates to having a good web presence. Mihm is careful to distinguish that merely having a website does not create such a presence; something that is often a misguided notion.
Mihm offers many resources to the DIY small business owner who finds they have the time and inclination to take these ‘baby steps’ into the SEO world.
Indeed, baby steps they would be.
All in all I would tend to agree with Mihm’s way of thinking, to first try to educate those in need of our help in web design, development, search engine optimization and marketing before trying to sell them anything. Learning about their business and circumstances is key to understanding just where they’re mindset is.
